Oh Stuart, locked down for the past year, I'm half woman, half sofa but the article on women who travel, took me right back. Poste Restante in Kathmandu, three months airmail letters, reading and re-reading them, mornings spent replying. No guide books, definitely no phones and (ahem) no travel insurance. These days if I don't whatsapp my daughter daily she's on my case (a memorable forum plea 'has anyone seen my mum') when I went off grid in Burma. My mum otoh wouldn't hear from me for months and months ('I'm going through Iran mum' 'you'll be fine').
